Physical Education

Subject intention

Elton Primary School believes that Physical Education should give every child, whatever their ability, an equal opportunity to develop their physical competence to their full potential so that they are able to move effectively, efficiently, safely and with enjoyment. A broad and balanced curriculum is intended to provide for pupil’s increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. Through the selection of suitably differentiated and logically developed tasks, it is intended that pupils will enjoy success, be inspired and will be motivated to further develop their individual potential.
A balance of individual, paired and group activities is planned for; co-operative, collaborative and competitive situations aims to cater for the preferences, strengths and needs of every pupil. Whilst retaining its unique contribution to a pupil’s education, Physical Education also has considerable potential to contribute to wider areas of learning through cross-curricular links. Every child has the right to be physically literate.

PE Curriculum

A wide range of activities are delivered in school which aim to engage and inspire all children. We are also committed to ensure that all children receive at least 2 hours per week of high quality well-planned PE.

Over the year each child will participate in games, athletics, dance and gymnastics lessons. Opportunities are also planned for swimming in Year 6. Our aim is that all children leave our school at the end of Year 6 able to swim at least 25 metres. In addition to this we provide lots of opportunities for the pupils to take part in a range of after school clubs and activities as well as completing the 'Daily Mile'.

At Elton, we provide lots of extra-curricular clubs/sessions for the children to take part in outside of playtime and PE lessons. These include active soccer, dodgeball, PDS dance, gymnastics, ball skills and active literacy.

We are lucky enough to work closely with community partnerships including Chester Football Club and Cheshire Phoenix Basketball Club who provide workshops and taster sessions.

EYFS

Physical Development ELG: Gross Motor Skills

Children at the expected level of development will:

* negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others

* demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing

* move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing

Key Stage 1

Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils should be taught to:

* master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

* participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending

* perform dances using simple movement patterns

Key Stage 2

Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils should be taught to:

* use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination

* play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending

* develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]

* perform dances using a range of movement patterns

* take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team

* compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best

Swimming and Water Safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

* swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

* use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

* perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

2024-2025

We are delighted to continue our membership with Ellesmere Port School Sports Partnership this year. The cluster will support PE with inter school competitions, continuous professional development (CPD) for staff, sports leadership programmes for pupils and special events. We are looking forward to continue to promote a variety of sport and engaging pupils in new experiences.

This academic year, using the PE funding, we have bought into 'CompletePE' scheme and hired an experienced sports coach 2 days per week to teach FS2-Y6.  We have hired our sports coach to work closely alongside our staff and pupils to deliver an excellent standard of knowledge and skill. Each year group throughout this academic year will benefit from our PE scheme and coach company by recieving high quality teaching within physical education.

Also this year, we will continue to compete in intra-house and inter-house competitions, attend sports festivals and continue to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Over the course of the academic year, we will have a targeted provision for those least active young people in our school.
